JPPM Speaker Series: “Hell Comes to Southern Maryland: The Point Lookout Prisoner of War Camp (1863-1865)”
Thursday, October 18, 2018
As the largest of all Union prisoner of war camps, the Point Lookout facility housed over 52,000 Confederate soldiers from 1863 - 1865. At times, over 20,000 were crammed into a 20 acre pen existing only in tents. This presentation provides an overview of the camp: why it was built, what it was like to be housed there, and why these conditions were permitted to exist.
Speaker: Bradley M. Gottfried, Ph.D.
