    All ages, adults accompaniment is required for children under 8. Wade in the bay with a seine net to discover critters living close to the shore.     Meet the naturalist on the beach for a quick introduction to fossiling and to pick up your take-home fossil kit (includes a small shovel, sifter and fossil ID guide).     The SMCR Dragon Quest is a scavenger hunt for cash prizes across St. Mary's and Calvert Counties. This event is not timed, and gives you and your small social-distance-friendly group a fun day hunting around town for puzzle pieces to complete your hunt. From the starting location, you'll be given a clue to the next stop on the route. When you arrive, you'll pick up your coveted puzzle piece, participate in a team challenge, take a photo with the Station Banner, and be given a clue to the next station. When you arrive at the final stop, you and your group will put together your puzzle at a designated table which will be cleaned specially for you! Take a photo of your team with the completed puzzle and return home to await the results of the prize drawing.

  41. Speaker Series: The Nunalleo Excavation - Cultural Preservation and Collaboration In Southwest Alaska's Rapidly Changing Environment

    Speaker: Francis Lukezic, Conservator, Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab. Always ready for an adventure, Francis spent the summer of 2018 in southwest Alaska as site conservator and lab manager at the Nunalleq Archaeological Excavation, which is the subject of this talk. Nunalleq is a pre-contact Yup'ik site located in southwest Alaska, on the coast of the Bering Sea, and produced over 60,000 artifacts over 10 years of seasonal excavations. The presentation highlights the Yup'ik village of Quinhagak's collaboration with archaeologists and conservators to save thousands of artifacts from the Nunalleq site before they eroded out of the tundra and washed into the Bering Sea and to create the Nunalleq Culture and Archaeology Center, the home for all the artifacts.

  49. CANCELED - 154th Calvert County Jousting Tournament - CANCELED

    August 29, 2020, 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM @ Christ Church

    This event features the traditional equestrian sport of ring jousting. This is the spearing of rings while riding on a running horse. The competition is broken down into 4 classes based on skill only. Men and women, as well as adults and children, compete against each other. Ring jousting has been active in Maryland for over a century and a half, ultimately becoming Maryland's official state sport in 1962. You may also visit our 19th century one-room school, shop at a bazaar and cool off in the air-conditioned church while enjoying an organ concert. Stay for a family style dinner which includes deviled crab, baked ham, fried chicken (choice of 2), assorted side dishes, dessert and drinks. Enjoy as a boxed supper or served in an air-conditioned hall. Shop at the bazaar which will also include a children's corner featuring pony rides, face painting, a balloon artist and many other activities.
