    The Kay Daugherty Gallery at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center will feature On Paper: Printmaking, Book Arts & Beyond. Techniques such as relief printing, etching, lithography, paper making, book binding, letterpress, collage and papercut will be explored. All works should showcase the unique process and craftsmanship that goes into each handmande paper, print, or collage. Also included are gourds made into fully functional birdhouses, painted and decorated to become whimsical habitats such as spaceships, creatures, and characters.

  7. Wheel Thrown Ceramics for Beginners!

    Learn to use the potter's wheel to create cups, bowls, and vases. No experience is necessary. Beginners will focus on learning fundamental skills. This series includes 6 instructor-led classes and additional open studio time as desired. There is an optional open studio on Sunday, May 2, 11am-4pm. Class includes 25 lbs of clay and use of studio equipment and glazes. Additional clay available for purchase if needed. Due to COVID safety guidelines, all participants must wear a mask (up and over the nose!) while in the clay studio. Please bring your own hand towel or paper towels.

  14. Murder Mystery Dinner – Death by Chocolate

    It’s April 15, 1900, Easter Sunday, and Paris is the center of the world’s attention as millions of visitors arrive for the opening of the International Exposition this weekend. Amongst them is an elite but diverse group of individuals staying at the Hotel Paradiso. As they gather for dinner, however, the peace of the hotel is rocked by an explosion. Billy Bonka, the foremost chocolate manufacturer in America, is found dead in his room, having apparently been killed by an explosive Easter Egg. Suspicion falls on the people around the table. One – or more – of you is the murderer. Your task is to discover who that killer is. Each guest will be assigned a character for the evening. You are encouraged to come in costume. Includes a three-course gourmet meal which you will enjoy as you work toward solving the mystery.

  18. Virtual - Sea Level Rise in Maryland lecture by Dr. Hali Kilbourne

    Dr. Hali Kilbourne is a Research Associate Professor with the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory campus. Before coming to Southern Maryland, Dr. Kilbourne was a visiting professor at McDaniel College and held a prestigious U.S. National Research Council postdoctoral position with which she worked at the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration Earth System Research Laboratory. She obtained her undergraduate training in Geology from Smith College and graduate training in Marine Science from the University of South Florida. She specializes in the fields of Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology. Her research focuses on understanding the climate of the last 2000 years to provide context for modern changes and to improve our understanding of climate system processes driving climate variability. Such information can help us improve climate models used for predicting future climate change.

Since many streams in the Chesapeake Bay watershed are severely degraded, stream restoration is increasingly used to improve their water quality. Yet, the effectiveness of projects implemented is still questionable, and recovery is a slow, complex task. Dr. Solange Filoso has monitored restored streams in Maryland for over a decade. In this seminar, she will share her assessment of restoration effectiveness, and discuss the importance of monitoring data to policy and management decisions in the region.

  24. Guided Hiking Tour of Jefferson Patterson Park

    Nearly 70 archaeological sites document a remarkable and varied history that goes back thousands of years at JPPM. Through this special guided hike, visitors can learn about the 9,000 years of human history uncovered by the archaeology carried out on the park. Please note this is an approximately 3-hour, 2.5 mile hike on various surfaces/elevations, and can be strenuous for new hikers. Dress comfortably and bring plenty of water, as there are no fountains along hike. Groups will meet at the Visitor Center parking lot.

    Calvert Behavioral Health Recovery Support Presents The 4th Annual Shatter the Stigma 5K run/walk! EVENT IS FREE. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. (registration closes March 30th). This 5K is to bring awareness to help shatter the stigma against addiction & mental health.   28. Built by Women Exhibit Talk & Park Tours

    The Built by Women DC exhibit (BxW DC) will be on display for a special weekend in an outdoor pavilion on the grounds of the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum. The juried exhibit showcases 30 outstanding sites where women were directly responsible for leading the design or construction of the project in the Washington D.C. metro region (including southern Maryland and north Virginia). The BxW DC exhibit was the outcome of a juried competition organized by the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation in 2016 to recognize women’s contributions to our built environment. On SATURDAY ONLY, from 11:00am-12noon, women design professionals will be on hand to answer questions about the exhibit and some of the projects featured. GUIDED TOURS of the park grounds will be offered at 12noon & 1pm on Saturday as well as 11am & 1pm on Sunday by first-come-first-serve basis.

This series - Future Chesapeake Bay health will depend on the combined influence of environmental changes and peoples' responses to those changes. Dr. Lisa Wainger will describe research into these combined effects that found that adaptations that farmers are already making to improve crop growth under changing weather are likely to prevent some harm to Chesapeake Bay water quality. This beneficial effect could be enhanced by looking for additional opportunities to change the timing of nutrients to water bodies.

  33. City Nature Challenge 2021

    This is a self led event for the whole family. Spend the an hour or a day outside exploring with your family in this fun bio blitz-style event called the “City Nature Challenge.” It’s easy – look for and find wildlife and plants, take a picture, and share it to iNaturalist (this can happen back at home also). During the weekend of April 30-May 3, 2021 individuals and groups will be on the hunt for animals, plants, mushrooms, and other life forms. These observations will be documented on iNaturalist and counted towards our region's tally.
