Mail Service

Overview

Mail must be received via the U.S. Postal Service only. Visitors may not bring mail to the Detention Center. Incoming and outgoing mail is accepted and delivered by Calvert County Detention Center Correctional Staff only.

Mailing Address

Mail sent to an inmate must be addressed to:

Incoming Inmate Mail

All incoming mail must be handwritten in pencil or ink pen (blue or black ink) on white, plain, or lined paper only (no colored or tinted paper).

Envelopes must be addressed with the sender’s full name and address. The return address must be written on the front of the envelope. A P.O. box is not acceptable; the sender must also have the physical street address. Incoming mail with a return address label or without a full name will be returned to sender. Any mail without a return address will be returned to the post office.

Pictures

Photos received through the mail in excess of four will be returned to sender. Photos are to be no larger than 4"x6". Instamatic or Polaroid type photos will not be accepted. Photos must be on photo paper. Pictures reproduced on copy paper will be returned (unapproved item).

Cards

We no longer accept any form of greeting cards. If mailed, the cards will automatically be returned to sender. We can accept post cards, but no larger than 6 by 9 inches.  All postcards will be photocopied and a copy will be delivered to the inmate.  All post card need a return address with the sender’s full name.

Publications / Books

The Calvert County Detention Center does not accept book/magazine subscriptions.

Unapproved Items

  • No cartoons, stick-on labels, stickers, calendars, puzzles, or book pages
  • Nude or partially nude photographs of any kind
  • Drawings made with paint, glue, glitter, tape, jewelry, crayons, markers, colored pencils, colored ink and highlighters
  • Labels
  • Magazine pages and newspaper clippings
  • Photo-copied pictures
  • Provocative material (photographs / pictures / drawings)
  • Stamps, envelopes and blank correspondence
  • Internet printed material
  • Greeting Cards
  • Multiple thumb-nail or smaller computer-generated photos clustered on a single sheet of paper

The Detention Center is not responsible for mail that is damaged or lost by the post office.
